My Diary

I Heard My Name From the Stairs and Needed a Full Breath Before Answering

Dear Delyara, That breath mattered. Not because I didn’t want to answer. Because by that point in the evening, my name had already been used too many times as a doorway into one more need. One more question. One more missing thing. One more practical uncertainty someone expected me to solve with a voice that sounded gentle enough not to make them feel the cost of being needed. So before I answered, I took one breath. Then I said yes. I think a lot of women live in that breath. The small invisible gap between what they really feel and the version of themselves they choose to offer the people they love instead. It is such a tiny space, and yet it holds an enormous amount of effort. Tonight, that breath was the most honest part of me.
