I Heard My Own Voice Sound Flat

Dear Delyara, Not angry. Not cold. Just flat. I was answering an ordinary question. Something about dinner, I think. And halfway through my own sentence, I heard it — that empty used-up tone that comes when a woman has been useful for too long and emotionally fed for too little. Nobody commented on it. Why would they? It probably sounded normal enough. But I heard it. And once you hear the tiredness in your own voice, it is very hard to pretend you are fine in the same innocent way.
