My Diary

I Heard My Own Voice Sound Sharper Than I Meant and Carried the Guilt All Evening

Dear Delyara, It happened over something small. A question asked at the wrong moment. A child asking where something was while I was already doing three things and thinking about six more. I answered too quickly, too tightly, not cruelly but not as gently as I wanted. The room moved on. I didn’t. That is what I hate most. The way one tired edge in my tone can stay in my body for hours afterward, long after the child has forgotten it or forgiven it or simply moved on to the next thing. I carry those moments like tiny stones. Because I know the difference between discipline and depletion. And when my tiredness reaches the children through my voice, even briefly, something in me aches immediately. I apologised. It mattered. Still, I spent the rest of the evening wishing tenderness were less expensive by that hour of the day.
