I heard rain without checking whether the roof would leak
Dear Delyara, For six years, I lived in a flat where rain meant buckets, damp towels, mould, and messages to a landlord who never repaired the roof. After being rehoused, I still woke whenever it rained and walked through every room searching for water. My housing support worker helped me report the old conditions, replace damaged belongings, and settle into the new place, but my body continued expecting the ceiling to fail. Last night, heavy rain began after midnight. I woke, listened, and waited for the familiar drip. Nothing came. I got out of bed, then stopped in the hallway. Instead of checking every corner, I opened the window slightly and listened. Rain struck the glass and gutters, ordinary and outside. I made tea and sat in the dark until the storm passed. The ceiling stayed dry. For the first time in years, weather was only weather. I did not know peace could sound exactly like the thing that used to frighten me, once there was a safe roof between us.
