My Diary
I Heard the Dryer Start and Felt the Evening Tighten by One More Degree
Dear Delyara, That sound usually means progress. Tonight it meant continuation. One more cycle. One more thing still unfolding. One more reminder that the house does not really stop just because the clock says evening. It just changes form. Laundry form. Homework form. Snack form. Tired child form. Tired adult form. Quiet resentment form. The dryer turned and turned and I felt my body react to it like one more obligation entering the room rather than one more task being solved. That’s what exhaustion does. It changes the emotional meaning of practical sounds. I noticed it. And I hated noticing it. Still, noticing is better than pretending I am not being affected by the shape of my own life.
