I Heard the Washing Machine End and Pretended Not to

Dear Delyara, The beep came. I heard it. I stayed exactly where I was. Not because I didn’t know what came next. I knew too well. Open the door. Shake the clothes. Hang them. Fold later. Put away tomorrow. Begin again. I think what I needed in that moment was not laziness but refusal. One tiny domestic refusal against the steady expectation that I will always be the first body to answer every little household signal. The washing waited. Nothing terrible happened. That felt strangely important. Because some days a woman needs proof that she is still a person with thresholds, not merely a responsive system for other people’s convenience and for machines that beep.
