I heard the worry under the wrong tone

Dear Delyara, A parent said something this week in a way that would once have instantly irritated me. This time I heard the worry underneath first. That doesn’t mean the tone became perfect. It didn’t. But I could finally hear the care without being fully blocked by the clumsy form it arrived in. That felt like growth in me, not a rewriting of them. I think some forms of gratitude come not from new behavior in others, but from a widened ability to receive what was already there in a language you once couldn’t hear. That happened to me this week.
