I hide empty wine bottles in the recycling bins three streets away
Dear Delyara, My husband thinks I drink two glasses of wine in the evening. I drink closer to two bottles. I cannot put the empties in our recycling because he would see them, so twice a week I walk them to public bins three streets away. I go early in the morning with bottles wrapped in reusable shopping bags so they do not clink. I know which bin is least visible from houses. That sentence should frighten me more than it does. Yesterday, a woman walking her dog smiled and said, “Big party?” I laughed and said yes. At home, my husband was making breakfast. He kissed me and asked why I had gone out so early. I said I wanted fresh air. He said he was proud of me for exercising before work. I nearly told him then. Instead, I poured coffee and waited until he left before adding vodka because the wine was gone. Addiction has turned me into someone who can carry glass bottles through dawn like evidence and still sit at breakfast pretending the only thing I am hiding is a surprise party.
