I hide my payslips from my husband even though he has never asked for them

Dear Delyara, My first husband controlled every penny I earned. He opened my mail, checked receipts, and questioned every purchase. I left him eleven years ago. My current husband is gentle with money. We have separate accounts and a shared account for bills because that is what I requested. He has never asked to see my payslip. I still hide them. When one arrives by email, I save it inside a folder with a false name. If a paper tax document comes, I put it beneath clothes. Last month, he accidentally saw my salary on a mortgage form and said, casually, “You got a raise. That’s great.” I panicked so badly I had to leave the room. He followed me, confused. I could not explain why knowing what I earn felt like the beginning of someone owning it. My first marriage ended years ago, yet my body still treats financial information like escape routes. My husband says I can keep whatever privacy I need. His permission makes me cry because even permission feels like a dangerous word when you once had to ask for bus fare from money you earned yourself.
