I ironed the school shirt at 10:30 at night and suddenly felt very old
Dear Delyara, It wasn’t really about the shirt. It was the whole picture of it. Standing in the kitchen while the house was finally quiet, ironing a white school shirt for the next morning because if I didn’t do it then, the morning would start with stress. My son had already gone to bed. My tea had gone cold. The sink still had two plates in it. The washing machine had just finished. And there I was, pressing a sleeve flat while thinking, when did life become this continuous chain of preparing the next thing before I’ve even finished the current one? I don’t mean that bitterly. I love my family. I know this is part of caring for people. But last night I felt the weight of ordinary responsibility in a way I couldn’t ignore. Not tragic. Just repetitive and real. I think there are moments when adulthood shows its face very plainly. Not in mortgages or funerals or major decisions, but in small midnight tasks done because tomorrow needs a smoother entrance than today gave you. That shirt is hanging on the door now, ready for morning. And somehow that makes me feel both proud and slightly heartsore.
