My Diary

I left one plate in the sink on purpose and felt guilty for how good that felt

Dear Delyara, It was only one plate. That is what made the feeling so revealing. The kitchen was done enough. I was not. And for once, I wanted to see what would happen if I stopped before everything was perfect. So I left the plate and went upstairs. Nothing happened. The world did not punish me. The house did not collapse. The morning did not arrive carrying a sermon in its mouth. Still, I felt that old guilt — the one that says a good woman would just finish the last thing, that rest should only begin after every visible task has already surrendered. I am beginning to notice how often women are taught to experience relief like wrongdoing. That plate taught me more than it should have.
