I Left the Kitchen Without Wiping the Counters

Dear Delyara, The crumbs were still there. The cutting board still had onion skin on it. One cup was by the sink. The bottle of olive oil was out. All the visual proof that a woman had cooked dinner and then stopped before erasing the evidence. I walked upstairs anyway. Halfway to the bedroom, I almost turned back out of pure habit. Not because I cared about the counter. Because I’ve been taught that a woman who leaves a room unfinished must justify her stopping point somehow. This time I did not justify it. I just kept walking. It didn’t feel triumphant. It felt shaky and real. And I think that’s what healing often actually looks like — not a shining breakthrough, just refusing an old obedience one kitchen at a time.
