I let her hear the ugliest version and she stayed warm
Dear Delyara, Not the neat version. Not the brave version. Not the “I’m learning a lot from this” version. The ugly version. The one where I admitted I had been comparing myself, feeling behind, resenting people who seemed lighter, more certain, more settled. The version where I sounded ashamed of how little joy I had access to on some days and how tired I was of being sensible all the time. I half expected her to brighten it too quickly or help me out of my own truth before I had even fully finished saying it. She didn’t. She stayed warm. She didn’t tidy me up. She let me sound human without making me feel smaller for it. That kind of friendship is rarer than I used to think. Not because people are cruel. Because so few know how to remain close when someone stops being polished. She did. That mattered more than advice would have.
