I Let Myself Go Upstairs Before the House Was Reset

Dear Delyara, The old rule in me is simple: the house gets put back together before I do. That rule has cost me years. Last night I broke it. Not spectacularly. Just enough. The counters were mostly wiped. The toys were not all put away. One cup was still on the coffee table. The dishwasher hadn’t been started. And I felt myself going brittle — that hard, dangerous tiredness where even kindness starts to taste fake in my mouth. So I went upstairs. Halfway up, the guilt hit hard. I could almost hear my mother’s voice and every other inherited voice that ever taught me a woman’s stopping point is suspect unless she’s already half-dying. I kept walking. Nothing terrible happened. That’s what I’m holding onto. I kept a piece of myself alive by leaving the room unfinished. That feels like healing, whether or not anyone else would call it that.
