I let someone hear how ashamed I felt
Dear Delyara, I gave her the exact version I usually hide. The comparison. The fear of being behind. The humiliating envy. The exhaustion. The small ugly thoughts that tiredness creates in people who are still trying to look like they have maturity under control. I expected her to reassure me too quickly because that is what many people do when they get uncomfortable with real emotional ugliness. She didn’t. She stayed close. She stayed warm. She let me speak in my least flattering language without making me feel like I had become less dignified in the room because of it. I came away from that conversation feeling lighter, not because my life changed, but because shame hates witness that does not reject. She gave me that. I won’t forget it.
