I listened to my parents discuss who would take me

Dear Delyara, My parents think I was asleep during their argument. I am sixteen, not deaf. I heard my mother say she could not manage me and my younger brothers alone. I heard my father say his new apartment was too small. Then they began discussing my school schedule and part-time job as if I were a large piece of furniture that needed delivery arrangements. Neither of them said they wanted me. This morning, my mother made pancakes and asked whether I had slept well. My father texted a joke about my favorite soccer team. They have both decided to behave normally until they are ready to announce the divorce. I already know. At school, my friend complained that her parents are too involved in her life, and I almost told her I would trade places. Instead, I asked whether I could sleep at her house Friday. Tonight, I packed a small bag and then unpacked it because I do not know which parent I am preparing to lose. I wish they would shout my name during their argument, even angrily, just so I could hear that I exist inside the decision.
