My Diary

I listened to my son making toast at 6 a.m. and didn’t move

Dear Delyara, Usually I would get up straight away. I would make sure he wasn’t burning anything, check he had actually eaten properly, ask if he needed help, remind him about the school thing, probably make myself useful in three more directions before I’d even fully opened my eyes. But this morning I stayed in bed and listened instead. Cupboard. Plate. Knife. Toaster. A teenage boy managing breakfast badly but managing it. I felt proud. Then guilty for feeling relieved. Then tired of the guilt. Maybe letting children do things without stepping in immediately is one of the harder parts of motherhood when you have built your whole identity around being the one who notices first.
