My Diary
I Looked at the Fruit Bowl and Felt the Week’s Cost Sitting in It
Dear Delyara, I stood there putting things away and could feel how money has altered my emotional relationship with even the gentlest parts of family life. Fruit should feel like nourishment, colour, care. Instead, some part of me now reads it in receipts and shelf prices and how long it has to last. That’s what made me sad. I don’t want my children’s food to arrive in my body as budget tension first and maternal tenderness second. I don’t want ordinary domestic choices to carry this much quiet pressure. And yet, some days they do. I put the fruit into the bowl and looked at it as if it were both beautiful and slightly accusatory. That is probably exactly what financial stress does to domestic life. It turns simple things double.
