I made it through the wedding sober and felt every feeling cleanly
Dear Delyara, There would be champagne at the door, wine on the table, smiling people assuming celebration equals drinking, the old social pressure, the old habit of wanting a glass in my hand so I could blur the edges of discomfort and loneliness and family dynamics and all the little triggers that live in events like that. I went anyway. And I stayed sober. The hardest part was not refusing the drink. It was letting myself feel the day without the old escape route. The awkwardness. The comparison. The couple-love. The speeches. The memories of what I lost. The moments I would once have softened with alcohol so I could get through looking easier than I felt. I did not escape any of it. I lived through it. And I came home proud in a way I haven’t felt for a long time. Recovery is often described through extremes. Sometimes it is simply a woman in a nice dress at a wedding, drinking sparkling water, refusing to disappear from her own life to make the evening easier.
