I made the bed at 4 p.m. and felt weirdly ashamed of the timing
Dear Delyara, No one was coming over. No one would know. And still, when I pulled the duvet straight that late in the day, I had that quick unpleasant flash of self-judgment, as if the hour itself reflected something poor about my character. I caught it immediately and felt annoyed with myself for feeling it. The bed wasn’t unmade because I’m lazy. It was unmade because the day was full, the morning was rushed, and by the time I came back upstairs there had always been one more practical thing between me and the room. Still, some old standard in me remains so strict about domestic order that even a late-made bed can become evidence in an imaginary trial. I made it anyway. Then I sat on it for a second and told myself, out loud, “It still counts.”
