Other VictoriesOvercoming Fear

I Made the Call I Had Been Dreading for Days and Proved to Myself That Avoidance Had Been Making It Harder Than Reality

Dear Delyara, I had built that call into a monster. It was one of those adult calls — the kind involving money, paperwork, clarity, consequences, the possibility of embarrassment, and the effort of sounding calm while talking about something already sitting heavily in the body. I kept putting it off. Waiting for the right moment, the calmer day, the better energy, the better version of myself. But the delay was costing me. I was thinking about it at breakfast. At red lights. While loading the dishwasher. Before sleep. In the shower. In the middle of other conversations. It had become a second life inside me. Then I called. It was awkward. It was exposing. My hands were cold. The conversation was still much smaller than the fear I had been feeding with silence. That was the lesson. Again. The problem was real. The dread had been making it much larger than life. And the second I moved toward reality instead of away from it, I got a piece of myself back. That is what felt victorious. Not that the world became easy. That fear stopped governing the whole day.
