The SilenceLoneliness
I miss being central in someone’s inner life
Dear Delyara, The person someone turns toward first when something matters, or doesn’t matter, or is funny, or sad, or boring, or confusing. The first reach. The first message. The first emotional instinct. I miss that more than I know how to say without feeling foolish. Because loneliness at this stage of life is not always about having no people. It is about not feeling deeply, reflexively placed in anyone’s inner world anymore in the way I once hoped adulthood would give me. I am needed. I am appreciated. I am responsible. I am often even loved. But central in that intimate spontaneous way? That feels much rarer. I think I am grieving the absence of that more than the absence of company itself.
