I Miss Being Emotionally Central in Someone’s Life
Dear Delyara, The first person someone thinks to call. The first person someone wants to tell. The emotional home they return to when something good, bad, embarrassing, complicated, beautiful, or frightening happens. I miss that role more than I realised until life became full of contact without that kind of depth. I am needed in many ways. I am not sure I feel deeply placed in anyone’s emotional reflex the way I used to be. That is a specific loneliness. A very adult one. Because from the outside, my life is not empty. There are children, family, work, conversations, routines, messages, movement. The world touches me constantly. And still there are nights where I can feel the ache of not being someone’s first emotional instinct in the way I long to be. That longing embarrasses me sometimes. It still lives in me. Strongly.
