My Diary

I nearly cried over a missing water bottle

Dear Delyara, It was not about the bottle. It never is. We were already late, the hallway was full of shoes and noise, my son was asking where it was in the tone children use when they still believe mothers are somehow connected to all lost objects by instinct. I checked the kitchen, the bag, the car, under the table, behind the coats. Nothing. I could feel tears pressing against my eyes by the time I found it in the bathroom. The bathroom. For reasons no one could explain. I hate how often small practical things become the place where all my unspoken tiredness comes out. Not because they matter much, but because they arrive at exactly the point where I have no extra emotional padding left around ordinary inconvenience.
