My Diary

I nearly left the freezer open

Dear Delyara, I had already walked away. That was the scary part. I had taken what I needed, closed it in my head, and carried on doing something else. It was only when I felt the cold air later that I turned around and saw the door still open, humming away and making a fool of me. Nothing terrible happened. But the feeling it left behind was bigger than it should have been. I am tired of these little signs that my mind is carrying too much at once. The almost-mistakes. The near-misses. The things that get caught just in time and therefore never count as evidence to anyone else, while to me they feel like warning lights I’m the only one seeing. I shut the freezer and stood there for a second with my hand on the handle, suddenly less confident in my own attention than I had been five minutes before.
