My Diary

I nearly put the milk in the cupboard

Dear Delyara, I caught it just before it happened. I had the fridge open, the cupboard open, one child talking, the kettle boiling, and somehow my hand moved toward the wrong place with complete confidence. That was what unsettled me most — how natural the mistake felt right up until the final second. I laughed when I corrected it. Then I felt scared in a very small private way. Not because I think I’m losing my mind. Because I know what mental overload looks like in ordinary women’s lives, and it looks exactly like this sometimes: wrong shelf, wrong room, wrong pocket, wrong day, wrong door, one tiny slip after another while still functioning well enough that no one calls it by its real name. Fatigue is not always dramatic. Sometimes it’s just the milk nearly going in the cupboard.
