I opened the box without reading every letter
Dear Delyara, After leaving an abusive relationship, I kept a box containing every apology letter, gift note, and photograph because I believed I might need evidence or proof that love had once existed. For seven years, I opened the box whenever loneliness made me question leaving. Reading the letters always pulled me back into the cycle: cruelty, apology, promise, tenderness, fear. With my therapist, I decided to sort the contents. Today, I opened the box with a friend beside me. I kept documents relevant to the court record, destroyed the photographs I no longer wanted, and discarded letters without reading them again. One envelope remained sealed from the week I left. I had always believed I needed to know what he wrote. I shredded it unopened. Healing did not come from understanding every final explanation. It came from accepting that no sentence inside that envelope could alter what my body already survived.
