I opened the tax letter without hiding it
Dear Delyara, After my small business failed, I ignored tax letters for nearly two years. I stopped opening brown envelopes and moved them from the hallway to a drawer, then from the drawer to a suitcase. Penalties grew while I told my wife everything was being handled. When a final warning arrived, I confessed. We contacted an accountant and the tax authority, filed the missing returns, corrected estimated amounts, and agreed to a payment plan based on what I could actually afford. It took three years. Today, a letter arrived confirming the final payment and closing the arrangement. I opened it at the front door before fear could carry it upstairs. The balance is zero. My wife read the letter beside me. We did not celebrate immediately. First, I emptied the old suitcase and shredded every unopened envelope I had once treated like a threat capable of growing stronger if unseen. Financial recovery did not begin when I earned more. It began when I opened the first letter and allowed the true number to be smaller than the terror built around avoiding it.
