The WeightDebt

I owe money on a business that burned down

Dear Delyara, My café burned down eight months ago after an electrical fault. Insurance covered part of the building damage but not everything, and the business loans remain. I am paying for ovens that became twisted metal, tables taken away in skips, and a coffee machine I last saw blackened beneath the collapsed ceiling. Customers assume the insurance “took care of it.” It did not. I work in someone else’s restaurant now and send most of my wages toward debt from a business that no longer exists. Yesterday, the bank asked whether I wanted to refinance over a longer term. I will be sixty-two when the final payment is due. I opened the café at forty-eight because I thought I was finally brave enough to build something of my own. Now every month, £640 leaves my account with the old business name beside it. The fire lasted less than two hours. The debt will outlive a decade of mornings.
