My Diary

I packed my son’s bag and realised he is growing away from me

Dear Delyara, I am his mother, and tonight while putting his books back in his school bag, I found a crumpled note from a girl, a receipt for food he bought without telling me, and a timetable change he had clearly already dealt with on his own. None of that is wrong. That is life. That is growing up. Still, I stood there with his bag open on the bed and felt a quiet ache move through me. Because motherhood contains this strange double pain: you want them to become capable, private, independent people, and then one day they are, and it hurts more than you expected. You realise whole parts of their day now happen without you, and more than that, without them needing you to know about them afterward either. I zipped the bag, turned the light off, and stood in his doorway for a few seconds longer than usual. He is still my child. He is also becoming a person I will not always be central to. That truth arrived in his school bag tonight.
