I paid for Christmas without using credit

Dear Delyara, For most of my children’s childhood, January arrived with debt from December. Presents, food, travel, all charged because I wanted Christmas to look generous even when money was tight. Two years ago, I entered a debt-management plan and began setting aside a small amount each month specifically for Christmas. This year, when December came, the money was already there. I bought fewer gifts. We cooked at home. I told the children the budget before shopping instead of pretending there was no limit. Today, I checked my accounts and realized every Christmas expense has already been paid. No credit card waiting to turn one festive week into six months of interest. The children did not appear traumatized by receiving less. My youngest said it was the best Christmas because we played games instead of spending half the day driving between shops. Financial success sometimes looks embarrassingly ordinary: January arriving without a bill for happiness you already consumed.
