I paid off the card that had been living in my chest for years
Dear Delyara, I know there are bigger achievements in the world. This one felt enormous to me. That card had become more than debt. It was emotional background noise. It followed me into shops, into marriages, into school costs, into every little “extra,” into every time I wanted something for myself and immediately translated the desire into a guilty number. I had been carrying it for so long that the pressure of it had become part of my normal emotional climate. Then, last week, I made the final payment. I sat looking at the screen for a long time after. Not celebrating. Breathing. Because what left me in that moment wasn’t only a number. It was years of background tightening, years of small self-denials, years of private humiliation hidden inside ordinary life. I am not suddenly financially free. But that particular hand is no longer on my throat. That is a real victory. A practical one. An emotional one. A bodily one.
