I paid the rent from money I earned, not money I borrowed

Even when I found work, each month’s rent came partly from money borrowed against the next one. A debt adviser helped me freeze interest, apply for benefits I was entitled to, and build a budget based on what actually entered the account rather than what I hoped would. I took bookkeeping work in the evenings and sold the car I could not afford. This morning, I paid the full rent from wages and available income. No credit card. No loan. No payment pushed into next month. I stared at the confirmation screen for several minutes. The balance left afterward was small, but it was honest. For years, the roof over our heads had been held up by future panic. This month, it was paid for by the life we are living now.
