I passed the course I almost dropped out of

Dear Delyara, I am forty-eight years old, and this week I passed a course I nearly abandoned three separate times. I want to write that sentence down exactly because I know how easy it is to dismiss adult achievement when it does not happen at the expected age, in the expected order, with the expected confidence. I did not complete this course gracefully. I completed it tired, doubting, working around family life, reading late at night, forgetting things, crying twice, and seriously considering quitting every time I compared myself to younger people who seemed to learn faster and carry less fear around being seen trying. When the result came through, I stared at it for a long time before it fully went in. I passed. What makes this a victory is not only the certificate. It is that I stayed in the room long enough to let myself succeed at something I had already privately decided I might be too old, too tired, or too late in life to finish. That story was wrong. I’m so glad I didn’t let it become the ending.
