I picked up the paintbrush again and felt a forgotten room in me light up

Dear Delyara, The first ten minutes felt almost embarrassing. The paints were stiff. My hand felt rusty. I was so used to doing things that are useful, necessary, time-sensitive, or somebody-else-centred that standing there making colour for no practical reason felt almost indecent. Then it shifted. Quietly, gradually, my body remembered. The focus. The softness. The part of attention that belongs to making, not managing. I wasn’t particularly good. That had nothing to do with why it mattered. What mattered was that for one hour I was not reducing my life to function. I was not solving. I was not carrying. I was not translating anyone’s emotions into safety. I was painting, badly, and feeling more like a person than I had felt in days. That told me something important. I don’t only need rest. I need non-utility. I need parts of my life that do not have to justify themselves by service.
