I planted the tree where the house had burned

Dear Delyara, A wildfire destroyed our house two years ago. For months, I could not visit the property without smelling smoke that was no longer there. We rebuilt elsewhere, but the empty lot remained. This spring, my children and I returned with a young olive tree. The soil was difficult, mixed with ash and pieces of tile. We dug slowly and found a melted spoon, part of a door hinge, and blue glass from the kitchen window. We planted the tree near where the dining room had been. Today, it produced its first new leaves. They are small and almost silver in the sun. The tree does not restore the house or replace what burned. It gives the land one living thing whose story began after the fire. Sometimes that is what hope looks like: not rebuilding the same walls, but placing roots where destruction believed it had the final word.
