I played chess again after my husband died
Dear Delyara, My husband and I played chess after dinner for thirty-four years. He won more often and cheated only by talking until I forgot whose turn it was. After he died, I closed the board with a game still unfinished. It stayed on top of the cupboard for three years. My grandson found it and asked me to teach him. The first evening, I could barely touch the pieces. We started anyway. He moved the knight incorrectly six times. I became impatient in exactly the way my husband had been with me when we were young. Today, my grandson beat me without help. He stood up and shouted so loudly the neighbor knocked on the wall. I looked at the board afterward and realized I had played an entire game without thinking about the unfinished one until the end. The hobby had belonged to my marriage for so long that I thought grief owned it now. My grandson has begun borrowing it, badly and loudly.
