I Pray Differently Now
Dear Delyara, I used to think spiritual growth meant certainty. Now I think it means surrender. For years I approached life like a negotiation with fear. If I thought hard enough, controlled enough, anticipated enough, maybe I could avoid pain. Maybe I could outsmart uncertainty. Maybe I could be good enough to deserve safety. It did not work. The older I get, the more I understand that peace does not come from mastering every possible outcome. It comes from learning how to unclench around what cannot be guaranteed. My prayers have changed because of that. They used to sound polished, strategic, almost performative. Now they sound more human. Smaller. Simpler. Sometimes all I can say is, “Please help me not to panic.” Or, “Please help me trust what I cannot yet see.” Or just, “Stay with me.” Strangely, those weaker prayers have felt stronger than all the polished ones. I still fear uncertainty. I still struggle to release control. But something in me bows more easily now. Not out of defeat. Out of understanding. And that has changed the way I live.
