I pretended I was looking for my keys when I was really trying to calm down
Dear Delyara, I came in from work with that wired, uneven feeling I get sometimes after too much noise, too many people, too many tiny emotional adjustments. I put my bag down and immediately started looking around the hallway as if I had misplaced something important. I checked the table, my coat pocket, the kitchen counter, even the bathroom shelf for no reason at all. Halfway through it, I realized I wasn’t looking for my keys. They were in my hand. What I was actually doing was trying to discharge the leftover agitation in my body by turning it into a practical search. It would have been easier if I really had lost something. Then at least the restlessness would have had a name. Instead I just stood there in the hallway, embarrassed by myself and also strangely moved. It said something about the day that my body would rather invent a problem than admit it needed five minutes of stillness. So I sat down on the stairs and stayed there until the feeling came down a little.
