I put my own name on the design

Dear Delyara, For ten years, I worked behind a famous designer whose collections included patterns and structures I created. My name appeared nowhere. I accepted it because apprentices are told that invisibility is the cost of learning. Eventually, invisibility became the business model. Last year, I left, rented a shared studio, and produced a small collection using fabric from local mills. Today, my first independent show opened. Only sixty people attended, and one model’s zipper broke backstage. Still, when the programme was placed on every chair, my name was printed across the front. I held one copy in both hands before the audience entered. The collection may not sell. Reviews may be indifferent. The victory was seeing authorship stated plainly after years of watching my work walk into rooms attached to somebody else’s reputation.
