I put the wrong child’s yoghurt in the wrong lunchbox and heard about it at 3:20
Dear Delyara, Of course I did. Apparently one likes strawberry, one likes vanilla, and today I committed the kind of domestic administrative error that qualifies as an actual event in a child’s emotional world. My daughter announced it the second she got into the car, as if reporting a breach of trust. My son, who had actually been the accidental recipient of the preferred yoghurt, wisely kept quiet. I apologised. She recovered. Still, I spent the drive home thinking about how much invisible accuracy motherhood asks for. Not just feed them. Feed them correctly. Not just remember lunch. Remember the exact version of lunch attached to each small personality. It is so detailed, this love. And because it is detailed, sometimes one yoghurt can feel heavier than it should. By dinner, everyone had moved on. I was still slightly wounded by the whole thing.
