I Regret How Long I Stayed Calm In Rooms That Were Only Ever Rewarding My Silence
Dear Delyara, I used to believe calmness was always strength. Stay measured. Stay gracious. Stay above it. Don’t react too quickly. Don’t give people evidence that you’re difficult. Don’t make things worse. Don’t become the problem. I lived like that for years in certain rooms — work, family, relationships where being composed was somehow expected to count as virtue even while I was being diminished, ignored, manipulated, or quietly worn down. I regret that. Not because anger would have solved everything. Because my calmness often protected everyone except me. It made other people comfortable enough to continue exactly as they were while I privately paid the emotional price of being the “mature” one in dynamics that never should have asked that much maturity from me in the first place. That is a painful kind of hindsight. To realise that what you were praised for may also be what kept you unprotected.
