I resent how often money gets the first and last word in my day

Dear Delyara, Morning: can we afford this week properly? Night: what if next month is worse? That rhythm is exhausting. I am tired of money being the background music to so many ordinary moments. It is there while I choose groceries, while I say no to things, while I look at shoes that need replacing, while I count backwards from upcoming bills, while I decide whether a small comfort is “worth it,” while I try to fall asleep. It doesn’t even need to be a catastrophe to dominate. Repetition is enough. And because I am responsible, because I keep going, because from the outside life still mostly functions, I think people underestimate how much emotional space this takes. Financial pressure is not only about lacking money. It is about the narrowing of mental life around money. Some days I feel I have not had a single thought untouched by cost.
