I returned to journalism after refusing to reveal my source

Dear Delyara, Years ago, I left a newsroom after refusing pressure to identify a confidential source. The dispute damaged my reputation enough that I moved into communications work. I told myself journalism had become an idealistic phase of my younger life. I missed it constantly. Last year, an independent publication offered me a reporting role based on work I had continued doing privately. Today, my first major investigation was published under my name. Legal review was rigorous, sources were protected, and no editor asked me to compromise the promise that once cost me a job. Career victory has not erased what happened. It has shown me that leaving one institution did not mean leaving the profession itself. I spent years believing integrity had closed the door behind me.
