Other VictoriesOvercoming Fear

I returned to the dentist after twenty-five years

Dear Delyara, My grandfather pulled an infected tooth from my mouth at the kitchen table when I was eight. After that, I avoided dentists until pain became unbearable. A trauma-informed clinic allowed me to visit without treatment first, choose a signal that would stop the procedure, keep the door open, and have my sister remain beside me. The dentist explained every instrument before using it and never touched me without permission. Treatment required four appointments. During the first, I left after ten minutes. During the second, I completed X-rays. Today, the damaged tooth was repaired. I raised my hand twice, and the dentist stopped immediately both times. When the appointment ended, she handed me a mirror. I expected only relief from pain. What I felt was surprise that my body had remained mine throughout the entire procedure. Fear did not disappear, and the childhood memory remains. I now have a dental appointment booked for six months from today instead of another twenty-five years from an emergency.
