I returned to the laboratory under my own name
Dear Delyara, I left scientific research after my supervisor took credit for my work and made the lab unbearable when I challenged him. For four years, I worked outside academia and told people I was happier. Part of me was. Another part missed research every day. With support from a former colleague, I applied to a different institute. During the interview, I explained the gap truthfully without turning myself into either victim or hero. Today, I began as a senior researcher. My name is printed on the office door. That detail made me stop in the hallway longer than I expected. In my previous lab, I watched my ideas appear beneath somebody else’s name. This morning, I signed the first project document myself. Career recovery did not mean returning to the place that hurt me. It meant finding another room where my work and my name could occupy the same line.
