I Said No Clearly

Dear Delyara, No excuse. No elaborate explanation. No false softness to make the other person feel better than I felt honest. Just no. That was harder than it should have been. Because women are trained to package refusal attractively, to make it easy, understandable, painless, almost apologetic. A clean no can feel rude in a body trained for accommodation. Still, I said it. And the room survived. I survived. Nothing terrible followed. That mattered. Because every clear no teaches the body that honesty is not cruelty. Sometimes it is dignity.
