I said no to the client who kept speaking to me like I was disposable

Dear Delyara, I needed the money. That’s what made it difficult. He was the kind of client who called late, changed briefs after I had already finished the work, delayed payments, and then spoke in that polished, patronising tone people use when they think they can confuse your professionalism with your willingness to be disrespected. I kept telling myself I could manage it because business is hard and not every client is ideal. Then one evening he sent another rude message at 10:40 p.m., and I felt something clear in me instead of anxious. I replied the next morning, professionally, closed the project, and declined further work. I lost income. I kept my self-respect. I’m learning that sometimes those two things stand on opposite sides of the same choice.
