I said the embarrassing thing out loud and she didn’t turn it into advice

Dear Delyara, I told her I felt behind. Not abstractly. Specifically. The ugly version. The school-gate comparison version. The “everyone else seems more settled” version. The quiet envy, the loneliness, the tired shame of feeling older and less certain than I wanted to feel in rooms where everybody else looked composed enough to make me doubt my own reality. I expected kindness. What I expected less was accuracy. She didn’t rush in with one of those sensible sentences that flatten the blood out of a feeling before it’s been properly honoured. She let the shame stay in the room without making me perform growth too quickly. That kind of friendship is a form of rescue. Not because it removes the feeling. Because it lets me remain dignified inside it.
