I said the humiliating thing out loud and she didn’t use encouragement to escape my reality

Dear Delyara, I told her I felt behind. Not elegantly, not wisely, not in a way that made me sound deep and impressive. I told her I felt envious of women who seemed steadier than I did, more certain, less tired, more formed in their lives. I admitted things I usually hide because they make me feel childish and exposed. She didn’t rush to tell me who I “really” was. She didn’t hand me perspective before she handed me presence. She stayed with the humiliation long enough that it stopped feeling like something I had to tidy before I deserved warmth. That is a form of friendship I trust completely now: the kind that does not panic when the truth looks ugly. The kind that lets dignity survive honesty.
